The Cave of the Seven Sleepers in Amman, Jordan

The Cave of the Seven Sleepers in Amman, Jordan

The cave is one of the several places related to the legend of a group of youths who hid inside a cave and years after woke up to find the world changed. This legend has two versions, Christian, and Islamic.

The Seven Sleepers’ main theme is the lives of people who have moved away from the public because of their religion. The kings want their faith to be accepted by all. Seven people who oppose this are running out to the mountain in order not to die. To escape one of the Roman persecutions of Christians. Here seven people fall into a long sleep. Long sleep duration is not clear, but generally, sources say it is 200 years. God protected these seven people for 200 years. After that, these people wake up from their caves and come back to life.

Western tradition calls the Seven Sleepers Maximian, Malchus, Marcian, John, Denis, Serapion, and Constantine and Their Dog Qitmeer.

The Cave of the Seven Sleepers in Jordan dating back to the Byzantine era.  Has eight smaller sealed tombs present inside and a ventilation duct coming out of the cave.

A number of artefacts were found during excavations, including coins belonging to the Roman era, Islamic era, and Ottoman era, together with a clay bowl, a pearl necklace, a copper comb, and rings. All of these things have now been gathered and placed on a display now maintained within the northern wall of the cave. Several clay jugs were also discovered nearby which were probably used to perform ablution.

Above and below the cave are the remains of two mosques. About 500m west of the cave is a large and slightly unkempt Byzantine cemetery. The cave is to the right of a large new mosque complex in the village of Rajib, off the road from Amman to Sabah.
