Tanoura Folkloric Show

Tanoura Folkloric Show

This amazing cultural heritage which is called Sufi Tanoura show with all the music and dance performance is a unique highlight of any trip to Cairo, Luxor & Aswan. The place is in cairo in an open-air theater in Wekalet El-Ghouri historic building at Khan-e-Khalili Bazaar in Cairo Downtown.

A must-see on top of the Cairo things to do in terms of a cultural experience that is not to be skipped. "Al Tanoura Heritage band" is one of the most important folkloric bands in Egyptian history, where it performed alongside various musical instruments, such as the oboe, drum, and Rababa, which makes the atmosphere different and wonderful to attend, and the band's activity began in February 1988, and currently includes 50 members, When they previously participated in many national events inside and outside Egypt, and the program of external cultural exchange, in addition to the main international festivals.

The dance is said to have come from Turkey and Egypt, with the colour of the multi-coloured skirts, as the distinguishing aspect. This form of surf dance has grown to be very popular in Dubai, also dominating other dancers outside the Islamic World. The dance is accompanied by Sufi Music and performed by Sufi men.

In a huge colorful skirt with lights attached to it, trousers below, and a white skullcap, the young man began to spin to the tunes of the Arabic song alongside the sound of rhythmic claps from the audience.

As the layers of the skirts spun and the performance went on, we saw the Tanoura dancer remove one skirt, fold it and hold it in his arms as if it’s a baby. Right before the end of his performance, the dancer removed one layer of the skirts, spinning it over his head, moving from one table to another to spin the skirt over the audience’s heads. I later learnt that some believe it is symbolic of the Almighty showering the attendees with blessings.
